Why Can I Understand My Child When Other People Can't?

Parents hear their child's speech every day. That familiarity gives you context that teachers, grandparents, peers, and strangers may not have.

You Are Using More Than the Speech Signal

You know what happened five minutes ago, what toy your child wants, which names they commonly say, and which sound substitutions they make. Your brain fills in missing information automatically. An unfamiliar listener cannot do that as easily.

Why This Becomes More Noticeable Outside the Home

At school or daycare, a listener may not know the topic. Peers may move on rather than ask for clarification. Teachers may have several children speaking at once. This can make a speech-sound difference that seemed manageable at home much more obvious.

Being the Family Translator Is Useful—but Also a Clue

If you routinely repeat your child's message for other people, it is worth asking whether the child's speech intelligibility is limiting independent communication.

What an Evaluation Can Clarify

A speech-language pathologist can analyze the types of sound errors, whether they follow a pattern, how consistent they are, and whether the child's overall speech profile fits age expectations. The goal is to determine whether monitoring or targeted speech-sound therapy makes sense.
