What Does a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Do?

Speech-language pathologist scope of practice overview
About this article: This post describes the scope of speech-language pathology broadly. Playdate Speech Therapy currently focuses on speech and language therapy and does not provide feeding or swallowing services.

Broadly speaking, we work with individuals who have communication, cognitive, and swallowing difficulties. But there are many subareas in these categories such as articulation, fluency, voice, language, feeding, swallowing, rehabilitation and AAC therapy.

Articulation/Speech Therapy is provided when individuals have a speech sound disorder due to structural/motor planning/functional difficulties.

Language Therapy is provided when individuals have difficulty comprehending others and expressing themselves.

Voice Therapy is provided when an individual's voice has an inappropriate pitch or inadequate volume depending on their age and gender.

Fluency Therapy is provided for individuals whose speech includes unusual blocks, pauses, or repetitions.

Feeding and Swallowing Therapy is provided to individuals who have difficulty swallowing and tolerating food with different textures or consistencies due to structural or functional difficulties.

Rehabilitation therapy is provided for individuals after a stroke or traumatic brain injury, or living with dementia.

Auditory training is provided for individuals with hearing difficulties.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication is provided for individuals with severe language difficulties and individuals who are nonspeaking or minimally speaking.

SLPs work with all ages and in various settings such as early intervention, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, home health, and private clinics.
