Super Sensory Slime

Sensory slime activity with pretend vegetables for language learning

Kids love slime! I love slime! And what's not to love about it? It's cool, smooth, and soft, and best of all, it's great for sensory play. Here are some fun ways you can use slime for language stimulation.

Cooking: Grab a toy pot and add toy food to make slime soup or salad or anything you can imagine. You can work on simple directions such as "add tomato/carrot/broccoli/corn to slime soup" or "add red/green/orange vegetable to the slime salad". You are working on two things: object and/or color identification and following simple commands.

Hide and seek: Hide toy animals or objects and have your child find them. You can work on target words like "in" and "out". For example, you can hide an object in the slime and ask "where is ______?", to elicit "in" and when you find the object, work on "out" while getting it out.

Slimy puddles: I use toy animals/people and make them jump in the slime. You can count to three followed by your target action word. For example, count “1, 2, 3” and say “Jump!” You can use other target action words such as go, swim, hop, waddle and so on.
