Summer reading and activity ideas for children

School's out, summer's in! While some kids will read a ton, let's be honest, some kids will want nothing to do with reading. Below are a few ways to sneak in some fun (reading):

1. Escape room

2. Scavenger hunt

3. Science experiments

4. Karaoke

5. Baking/cooking instructions

6. Game instructions

Scavenger Hunt/Escape Rooms

You can plan out a scavenger hunt or escape room—kids love them. Or if you are on the go/traveling, you can have them read and ask you the riddles. There are joke and riddle books that are ideal for your summer travels as they keep everyone engaged. These riddle links work great for scavenger hunts, escape rooms, or just about any time.

Science Experiments

Kids love science experiments. Whether they use a book or follow instructions online, they will have a blast pretending to be a scientist and they won't even realize they are reading. There are many resources on the web such as this one from Milwaukee With Kids with 20 easy experiments:

Karaoke:

There are a lot of karaoke apps and YouTube has a ton of songs with karaoke versions. Either way, kids will sing their hearts out while reading the lyrics.

Reading Instructions:

Have them read out instructions to a new game. Print out/have them read (on a device) simple baking and cooking recipes and follow them to create something delicious Search online and you will find many easy recipes for kids. Or just write down your own recipes.

Try a grocery scavenger hunt by giving them your list next time you are out shopping.
