A child who is not following directions, not responding to simple questions, or not using words or sentences appropriate for his/her age or producing sounds incorrectly making it difficult for them to be understood, or not talking the way other children at the same age are talking might need to be evaluated by a Speech Therapist.
If you are concerned about your child's ability to understand and use language, please contact us. We will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to find out if there is any delay and the areas that might need therapeutic intervention. Once the evaluation is completed, the Therapist would share the findings with the parents and would determine the therapy goals. Depending on the child's needs therapy time and duration are determined. It could be for 30-60 minutes, once or twice a week.
In Play-Based Therapy, the Therapist would work on the goals set to improve your child's speech and language skills. The Therapist has a game plan for every session and plans a number of age appropriate activities that would go with each goal. The child decides what activity he or she wants to do during the session. Throughout the session, which seems like play, the therapist has an agenda to accomplish the goals. Even through play, the child will be completely aware of his/her goals. Throughout the session the Therapist cues and prompts to encourage correct use of the target sounds, words or phrases. The Therapist also ensures that the child is following directions based on the set goals.
Tele-Therapy is the future of speech therapy. It is web-based therapy, where therapy is provided via video call (like FaceTime or Skype except more secure). Tele-Therapy is best when you have a busy schedule as it saves travel time or if transportation is an issue. The therapy techniques would still remain the same and are equally effective. If you are traveling you still won't miss a session with Tele-Therapy. Tele-Therapy is a virtual session as promising as a regular session and saves you travel time and cost of gas.
Parents are encouraged to be involved and use the strategies at all times. Parents are always informed and updated on the child's progress. There is no estimate on the time frame of the therapy as every child is different and has different areas to be addressed during the therapy. Parents and Therapist, as a team decides when the child is ready to be dismissed from Speech Therapy depending the progress made.
